Disclaimer & comment rulesThere never was going to be a ‘Mercosur-EU deal’, that much was obvious given the reaction to the deal in some EU countries.
Apr 20th, 2023 - 12:14 pm - Link - Report abuse +1Had that not been the case, Lula’s attitude to the Ukraine conflict would have killed it for sure.
There is no possibility of Lula’s ‘peace initiative’ going anywhere. It is simply pro-Russian and of no interest to the Ukrainians, whatsoever.
“not a sign of Brazil's strength as a regional power, but of its enormous economic dependence on China to the point of determining its foreign policy and, what is more serious, of the use of the world's reserve currency for a country with such a high foreign debt as Brazil,”
Interesting observations there.
Brazil has no external debt, on the contrary, Brazil is a creditor.

Brazil does have external debt and it’s rising relentlessly.

You are mistaken! The Brazilian State has no external debt. If there is debt, it is not from the government, but from the foreign companies that are installed in Brazil.

Yes, Brazil has a per capita debt of 3,400 USD. Very small compared to that of the US at 92,000 USD. Brazil at 73% of annual GDP Dec '22. US at 123% of GDP.

However, as the United States needs to sell dollars to the world to support wars, there would be a problem there.
I hope America builds a world of peace.
I believe that most of the G7 nations need the BRICS nations more than the other way around. The BRICS is also expanding quite rapidly to the middle east, Africa, Latin America. The biggest headwind for the BRICS will be US military intervention.

Brazil DOES have an external, or foreign debt - the sum of Brazil's PUBLIC obligations with other countries, international financial institutions etc or, what it owes....
Latest figure, source of which is the BCB (Brazil's Central Bank), is USD 575 billion, at end of 2022. Just fyi, at the end of the 14 year period under the PT (08/2016, when Dilma was kicked out) it was already USD 548 billion.
You obviously have trouble understanding the terms foreign debt, and foreign reserves.
Not only do you boldly state that Brazil has no foreign debt, which is wrong (see above), but you state it is a creditor.......of whom may I ask ?
Well, ok, Brazil is a creditor of Venezuela :USD 600 million, and Cuba: USD 600 million, but will never see one cent of it.
The fact it has roughly USD 328 billion in foreign reserves( Feb 2023) does not mean it's a creditor.....see it as the balance it has in an international checking account, in strong currency. And that balance can vary every month, updated at pre-determined time intervals, depending on its international BOP (balance of payments), you know, surplus minus deficits, such as total export revenue minus import outlays (BOT), that kind of stuff.
No idea what your source is, but it's miles off.
Ah, and BTW, the debt is what the Brazilian Federal Government owes, not private companies.
Another disheartening fact for you Brazzo, is that the Government's internal public debt.is 73,5% of the country's GDP, and growing ......nearly R$ 5,95 trillion compared to its GDP of 8 trillion. Not a good sign, especially considering the state of the economy and its perspective under the ex-convict and Haddad
And last of all, your statement Debt in one's own currency is a vote of confidence. Not debit is hilarious, and too stupid to waste time on, commenting.
