Major power cut hits most of Brazil for hours

A major-scale power outage left all of Brazil's states but one in the dark on Tuesday morning while the causes for such an event are still under investigation, it was reported. However, the National Electric System Operator (ONS) said that the reasons for the blackout and why the power grids linking the north and south of the country were separate issues. Authorities in South America's largest country said supply was back to normal after six hours.

Paraguay: Peña ready to be sworn in as President

Economist Santiago Peña of the National Republican Assembly (ANR) also known as the Colorado Party is to be sworn in Tuesday as Paraguay's new head of state during a ceremony in Asunción which will be attended by several former and current Latin American leaders such as Argentina's Alberto Fernández; Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva and Uruguay's Luis Lacalle Pou, Chile's Gabriel Boric Font and Bolivia's Luis Arce Catacora.

Argentine devaluation consistent with IMF guidelines

The International Monetary Fund es expected to release over US$ 10 billion to Argentina which might come as some sort of relief following Monday's decision to devaluate the local peso in the aftermath of the government's poor performance Sunday at the Open, Mandatory, and Simultaneous Primary (PASO) elections.

Argentine gov't orders 22% devaluation of the peso

The Government of Argentina Monday ordered a 22% devaluation of the national currency which stood at AR$ 365 / US$ 1 on the official market. Financial authorities also raised the interest rate from 97% to 118% annually, it was reported in Buenos Aires. Thus, the monthly rate will be 9.83% and the effective annual rate will be 209%.

A Falklands Day full of celebrations, King's message and flag flying in Parliament

14 August is Falklands Day and commemorates the first sighting of the Falkland Islands on that day in 1592 by the English navigator and explorer, John Davis, on board his 120 ton vessel 'Desire'. Davis (1550-1605) was one of the principal navigators under Queen Elizabeth I.
