“Blue” dollar back on surging track day after Argentine elections

The “blue” (a euphemism for “black market”) dollar stood at AR$ 1,100 Monday, an AR$ 200 increase from Friday's quotation, after Sunday's elections which saw Economy Minister Sergio Massa and Libertarian Congressman Javier Milei advance to the Nov. 19 runoff, it was reported in Buenos Aires.

New school attack leaves one student dead in Brazil

At least one student was killed and three other people were injured during a shooting spree at a public school in São Paulo, Brazilian authorities said. “During the shooting attack, three students were hit. One student died and three others are being treated at the Sapopemba General Hospital, one of whom was wounded while trying to flee during the attack,” the São Paulo State Governor's office explained in a statement.

Machado wins Venezuelan primaries by a landslide

Opposition leader María Corina Machado obtained 93.13 % of the vote in Venezuela's primary elections held Sunday. According to local authorities in Caracas, the results were not released until Monday due to technology issues. Although Machado was widely expected to win, it remains to be seen whether she is allowed to run against President Nicolás Maduro, who has been in office since 2012.

Last Brazilian evacuation flight from Israel lands home

Big news in oil industry: Chevron takes over Hess Corporation in a US$ 53 billion transaction

Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX) announced on Monday that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES) to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Hess in an all-stock transaction valued at US$ 53 billion, or US$ 171 per share based on Chevron’s closing price on October 20, 2023. Under the terms of the agreement, Hess shareholders will receive 1.0250 shares of Chevron for each Hess share. The total enterprise value, including debt, of the transaction is US$ 60 billion.
