Problem with anti-icing system detected in Voepass crash probe
According to audio recordings preserved in the so-called “black box,” the co-pilot of the doomed Voepass flight 2283 spoke of “a lot of ice” before tragedy ensued, according to a preliminary report released Friday by Brazil's Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa), Agencia Brasil reported.

Uruguayan Senator calls for Cardama deal for new Ocean Patrol Vessels to be dropped
Broad Front (Frente Amplio - FA) Senator Sandra Lazo insisted Friday that Uruguay should backtrack on its decision to purchase two newly-built Ocean Patrol Vessels (OPVs) from Spanish shipyard Cardama, a company at risk of bankruptcy that has not yet commenced building the units ordered in mid-2023. The Spanish shipyard is still unable to obtain the collaterals required by the contract with the Uruguayan authorities.

Brazilian Bossa Nova legend Sergio Mendes dies aged 83
Brazilian musician Sérgio Mendes, who once won a Grammy Award, succumbed Thursday in the city of Los Angeles to the effects of prolonged Covid-19, according to The Associated Press. He had been facing respiratory problems for months, O Globo reported. The pianist, composer, vocalist, and arranger was 83. He had moved to the United States in 1964 after the military coup d'état.

Lula sacks Human Rights Minister accused of sexual misconduct
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Friday sacked Human Rights Minister Silvio Almeida, who was accused of sexual harassment against several women. The PT leader said that no official would remain active in his administration under those circumstances, given the “seriousness of the accusations.”
