Maduro now salutes González Urrutia in exile

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said in his weekly TV show Monday that he now respects former presidential candidate and retired diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who sought asylum in Spain after insisting he had won the July 28 elections, for which an arrest warrant had been issued against him.

Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Citi forecast oil price falling in Q4 and 2025

Investment bank Morgan Stanley has again cut its forecast price for a barrel of oil, expecting the international benchmark to average US$ 75 a barrel in the last quarter of the year. Online overtakes television in an annual survey of the UK's news habits

Research by the broadcast regulator Ofcom reveals 71% of the UK population said they used online services for news versus 70% for TV news bulletins. According to an article from BBC, over last year, online sources grew from 68% to 71%, while social media also saw a rise from 47% to 52%. For people aged between 16 and 24, the number saying they use social media for news was 82%.

Punta Arenas and Ushuaia inaugurate cruise season 2024/25 next week

Punta Arenas and Ushuaia are ready for the start of the cruise season which in Chile is scheduled for Saturday 14th September and in Argentina, 17th September. In both cases it is a regional cruise with the “Ventus Australis” along the Chilean straits and channels, but there is great optimism that it could in effect 2024/25 could be a record season.

Chilean Supreme Court Justice Vivanco suspended for ties to corruption scandal

Chile's Supreme Court Monday suspended Justice Ángela Vivanco from her bench after she was found to be linked to a corruption case. In the meantime, the process for her permanent dismissal has been triggered. Vivanco may not be the only magistrate to lose her job to the scandal.

Heavy smoke from Bolivian fires threatens large parts of Argentina

A large cloud of smoke stemming from wildfires in Bolivia threatens to cover the skies of 15 Argentine provinces and even reach the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) between Monday and Tuesday, due to which “phenomena that may represent inconveniences or difficulties in the normal development in social life are expected,” according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

FAO August Food Price Index declined marginally, meat and cereals down, dairy and vegetable oil up

The benchmark for world food commodity prices declined marginally in August, as decreases in quotations for sugar, meat, and cereals outweighed increases in those for vegetable oils and dairy products, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported.

Falklands: Explosive Disposal team locate and destroy a live anti vehicle landmine

On 31 August, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC) in the Falkland Islands were tasked to Cape Pembroke, North of Stanley Airport, for a possible landmine found by two serving soldiers from MPC.
