Brazilian Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, referred to Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Alexandre De Mraes as the crazy judge during an interview with a US broadcaster's Real America's Voice show.
He claimed De Moraes was persecuting his father and his family. The excerpt from the interview was published on Sunday on the congressman's social media accounts. In his speech, he stated that US President Donald Trump was the greatest leader in the history of mankind and the 50% tariffs imposed on Brazilian exports were not commercial in nature, but rather political.
In his view, De Moraes doubled down on his bet against Trump when, after the US sanctions, he decreed the former president's house arrest, which reflected Brazil's institutional crisis. The only way to end it is by passing the amnesty bill, which is pending in Congress and provides for pardon for crimes committed during the January 8, 2023, events against the headquarters of all three branches of Government.
Jair Bolsonaro would be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the bill's approval, as he is accused of being an active participant in the plot to overthrow the government and abolish the democratic rule of law. The trial is scheduled for Sept. 2.
The congressman said that the bill must be approved not only to free Jair Bolsonaro, but also to allow him to return to Brazil and to ensure broad participation by the opposition in the 2026 elections. Eduardo has been in the United States since February 2025.
According to Eduardo, the US application of the Magnitsky Act against De Moraes is a direct sanction by Trump against his decisions. He also warned that fellow STF Justice Flávio Dino could also be sanctioned, given his ruling that international laws could only be enforced in Brazil with internal approval.
Dino's decision creates an impasse with banks, which must decide between following the STF's decision or that of the US government. They [banks] have to follow the Magnitsky Act, because otherwise, they will go bankrupt. You can't survive without access to the world's largest financial market, which is in the US, Bolsonaro argued. Brazilian banks with international ties are debating whether to enforce the US cancellation of De Moraes' VISA and Master Card cards.
