Argentina asks the law of the sea tribunal to halt Sea Lion and bar new oil permits

Argentina has asked the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to order the United Kingdom to prevent the development of the Sea Lion oil project north of the Falklands and to refrain from granting new permits to exploit the resources of the disputed continental shelf, according to a statement published by the Hamburg-based tribunal. The hearing will be set “at the earliest possible date”.

Pope Leo XIV has lung cancer and underwent successful surgery, Vatican says

Pope Leo XIV, 71, has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma and underwent successful surgery on Tuesday at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where doctors removed the lower lobe of his right lung, the Holy See said in a medical bulletin. The operation comes three weeks before the start of his tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, whose schedule has not been changed.

London says it will abide by any law of the sea provisional measures as it moves to shield its companies

The British government said on Tuesday that any provisional measures ordered by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea are binding and that the United Kingdom complies with its international obligations, on the same day Argentina asked that tribunal to halt the Sea Lion oil project in Falklands waters. In parallel, London announced it will use its protection of trading interests legislation to shield British companies from Argentine sanctions.

Brazil blames human action for the fires sweeping the Amazon

The Brazilian government has blamed deliberate human action for the wave of fires in Amazonas state, where 540 new hotspots were recorded in 48 hours, more than half of those detected in the whole of October 2025, according to the National Institute for Space Research. The situation has led to a state of emergency in 36 municipalities.

IMF trims Latin America’s outlook to 2.3% and sharply cuts Argentina’s

The International Monetary Fund has lowered its 2026 growth forecast for Latin America and the Caribbean to 2.3%, a tenth of a point less than in July, and sharply cut Argentina’s, from 3.5% to 2.1%. Chile and Uruguay are also among the region’s largest downward revisions, according to the World Economic Outlook presented on Monday in Bangkok, during the annual meetings of the Fund and the World Bank.

Iguazú Falls closed as the river’s flow tops 12,000 cubic metres per second

Iguazú National Park, in Argentina’s Misiones province, closed access to the falls’ walkways on Monday because of an exceptional rise in the Iguazú River, whose flow exceeded 12,000 cubic metres per second. The flood is part of an episode of heavy rainfall linked to El Niño that has also caused the Uruguay River to burst its banks, with evacuations on both sides.
