    South Georgia Island, 250th Anniversary of British Possession, led by the great navigator James Cook

    The stamp issue commemorates Possession itself and the start of South Georgia’s 250-year journey from obscurity to the modern age. 

    On the 17th of January 1775, English Captain James Cook landed at Possession Bay in South Georgia Island. While his vessel HMS Resolution sat at anchor in the bay, Cook went ashore, hoisted the British flag and performed the ceremony of taking possession of the island, in the name of King George III and his heirs.

    Antarctica historic milestone, successful drilling of a 2.800 meters long ice core, more than 1.2 million years old

    “We have a strong indication that the uppermost 2,480 meters contain a climate record that goes back to 1.2 million years,” Julien Westhoff, chief scientist in the field at Copenhagen University

    The fourth Antarctic campaign of the Beyond EPICA-Oldest Ice project has achieved a historic milestone this week, by successfully drilling a 2800-metre-long ice core, consisting of ice from the Antarctic ice sheet which is more than 1.2 million years old.

    A scientist team aboard the Royal Navy icebreaker is uncovering the damage plastic waste is having on Antarctica. As part of efforts to preserve one of the world’s most unique and fragile environments, critical work has been carried out by researchers from the University of Portsmouth aboard polar research vessel HMS Protector.

    Chile's President Gabriel Boric Font Friday became the first Latin American leader and the third worldwide to reach the South Pole, thus consolidating his country's commitment to Antarctica. His feat followed in the footsteps of those authorities from New Zealand in 2007 and Norway in 2011. Boric dubbed his trip “a diplomatic, scientific, environmental and aeronautical milestone.” It also Chile as “the gateway to Antarctica,” he said.

    Boric South Pole bound after weather problems ruled out

    Boric's journey is supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the UK's Antarctic Program, among other international partners

    Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font's trip to the South Pole was confirmed Thursday by the La Moneda Palace in Santiago after its feasibility had been questioned due to poor weather. The journey between Jan. 2 and 4, will include other officials as well as a scientific team to tour the Union Glacier Joint Scientific Polar Station and the Amundsen-Scott Base.

    World's largest iceberg headed for South Georgia Island

    A larger ice formation broke off in 1986 from the Antarctic Filchner Ice Shelf when it cracked into three smaller pieces, A23a being one of them

    According to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the 3,600 square kilometer iceberg known as A23a broke off from Antarctica and was reportedly going adrift in the South Atlantic, probably towards South Georgia Island. It is arguably the world's largest and oldest iceberg, with ice sheets 400 meters thick, and weighing almost one billion tons.
