    Brazil sets new biodiversity targets for 2025-2030 term

    A total of 23 goals have been set to promote the regeneration of Brazil's biomes

    Brazil's National Biodiversity Commission (Conabio) has established new national biodiversity targets for the period 2025 to 2030 and recommended a new set of measures for the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP), pursuant to the Dec. 2022 Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), of which the South American country is a signatory.

    Pod of 157 false killer whales stranded in Tasmania; most died and survivors have to be euthanized

    Australian authorities have confirmed that 67 of the 157 false killer whales stranded on a remote beach on Tasmania’s West Coast overnight Tuesday/Wednesday have died. Parks and Wildlife’s Shelley Graham said on Wednesday afternoon that the surviving whales remain in “unfavorable” conditions, with attempts to refloat two of them unsuccessful, meaning euthanasia is a strong solution.

    Two female King Penguins, German born, join Birdland Park in Gloucestershire

    Two female King penguins arrived last week at Birdland Park and Gardens in Bourton-on-the-Water in the Cotswolds, in Gloucestershire. The pair hatched in Wuppertal, Germany, in 2021 and 2023 and are believed to be the first female king penguins to be imported to the UK in 15 years. The Birdland Park hopes to boost its breeding program of King Penguins.

    Record-high temperatures hit Rio de Janeiro

    There is no rain forecast for the remainder of this week

    Rio de Janeiro City authorities Monday recorded a temperature of 44ºC, the highest on the Rio Alert System files since 2014, and with no rain forecast for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Temperatures are thus expected to be above 40°C with moderate winds on Tuesday afternoon while dropping slightly in the coming days.

    A Korean news site has published an interesting article on Penguin Eggs, and its nutritional virtues, which it describes as “once vital for Antarctic Explorers”, and we might add decades ago, part of Falkland Islanders diet, but which are now illegal to consume and penguins very much protected and loved.

    Brazilian authorities confirmed that a total of 194,331 migrants arrived in South America's largest country last year, according to the 8th edition of the Migration Bulletin, published by the National Justice Secretariat (Senajus) Monday. Venezuelans topped the list with 94,726 people. As for refugees, ”Venezuela remains the main country of origin of recognized refugees (12,726), followed by Afghanistan (283) and Colombia (121),” the bulletin stated.

    The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has launched a public consultation to help shape a Land Recovery Program. This initiative is aimed at supporting farmers and other land managers in restoring degraded land, sustaining agricultural productivity, and enhancing biodiversity.
