    Schmidt Ocean Institute will explore South Atlantic Ocean in 2025

    The Institute’s research vessel, the Falcor(too), will map the waters surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula in the Bellingshausen Sea in early 2025.

    The California based Schmidt Ocean Institute (*) has announced its 2025 expedition schedule will take it to the South Atlantic Ocean, including Antarctica, South Georgia, Patagonian shelf, Mar del Plata and Uruguay.

    The Falkland Islands Public Works Department has announced that the handing over of Tussac House, the sheltered homes project, has been delayed again. The handover to the Health Directorate should have happened mid-November but is delayed due to mechanical and electrical issues.

    It was a grand finale for the two days Joint Ministerial Council held in London between the democratic representatives from Britain’s Overseas Territories and the new UK government’s cabinet ministers, chaired by Foreign minister Stephen Doughty. In effect, Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the group at the end of the event, reaffirming his government’s commitment to the OTs and the principle, “nothing about you, without you”. The Prime Minister also mentioned the Falkland Islands, when remembering his family’s despair during the 1982 war, after HMS Antilope went down with much loss of lives, and hours later it was reported that Starmer’s mother brother, miraculously survived.

    Falklands, survey insights into waste management in Camp

    As part of an ongoing effort to understand waste management practices in Camp, the Falkland Islands Environment Department, supported by FIDC, Falkland Islands Development Corporation conducted a comprehensive survey. This included gathering feedback from attendees at the Farmers Week Expo and responses from a questionnaire circulated to residents of Camp. The survey ran from the 30th June to the 16th September 2024, and collected valuable input from 49 respondents. These findings shed light on the current state of waste management, the challenges faced, and the support needed to create a more sustainable approach for the community.
