  Avian Influenza detected in mammals in Sub-Antarctica for the first time; DEFRA funds for FlluTrailMap

  

  The presence of High Pathogenicity Avian Influenza (HPAI) was confirmed on Thursday 11 January for the first time in mammals in sub-Antarctica. The disease was detected in elephant and fur seals on the island of South Georgia by experts from the UK’s world-leading Animal Plant Health Agency (APHA).

  Galicia fleet sail for Falklands fisheries, “it's an adventure, given the uncertainties”

  

  Some 1,200 crew members are readying in Galicia to depart for the South Atlantic fisheries to begin the first of two squid in Falkland Islands waters. A mission according to reports from the Vigo media, which could be one of the most difficult of the long standing relation between the Spanish fishermen and their Falklands counterpart partners.

  UK Defense minister, “Royal Marines are absolutely essential”

  

  The UK Defense Secretary has told MPs he has asked the head of the Royal Navy to come up with a plan for future Royal Marines deployments. News reports have suggested that HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark could be retired to free up sailors for other vessels, amid a recruitment crisis.

  Falklands Representative honors Margaret Thatcher on annual memorial day

  

  In observance of Margaret Thatcher Day, Richard Hyslop, Falkland Islands Government Representative to the UK & Europe, paid respects to the late Baroness Thatcher. He laid a bouquet of flowers on her grave, representing the gratitude of the Falklands for her role in the liberation of the Islands during 1982 conflict in the South Atlantic.

  United Kingdom launches search to find the artist of a striking Falklands painting

  

  A search has been launched by the DIO for the artist of a striking painting that depicts the brutal reality of the Falklands War. The picture was found in a former classroom at HMS Raleigh by a staff member who works for the Defence Infrastructure Organization (DIO). With the classroom not currently in use, the painting had been all but forgotten about.

  The 1933 Whalebone Arch which commemorates British continuous rule in Falklands

  

  One of the attractions when visiting the Falkland Islands' capital Stanley City is the Whalebone Arch, adjacent to the cathedral, the southernmost Anglican cathedral in the world. Locals, tourists and cruise visitors love to enjoy and picture the impressive mandibles of blue whales in the arch, but not many are aware it was erected in 1933, to commemorate the centenary of continuous British administration in the Falklands. The land and garden that forms the Arch Green (formerly Cathedral Green) was given by the Falkland Islands Company to the Falkland Islands Government for the leisure of the people of Stanley, and enjoyment of visitors.

  Falklands Rockhopper set to receive huge sum because of an arbitration with Italy

  

  Falklands oil company, Rockhopper Exploration PLC has agreed with a regulated specialist fund to monetize the arbitration award. The award announced in August 2022 relates to arbitration against Italy involving Ombrina Mare oil field in the Adriatic. (*)
