The expert advisor for two seafood investment funds and three times author, spoke about his latest publication, ‘Food from the Sea: The Future of Seafood’. Falklands TV talked with him about his experiences and views on the future of sustainable seafood and the potential for salmon farming in the Falklands.

A small delegation from Salmon Free Falklands recently spent a week in the Faroes, intent on gathering facts and figures, and listening to local expert opinions about the industry there.

    Falklands’ avian influenza, Yorke Bay Gentoo Colony closed to Public Access

    Given the proximity of the affected colony to Stanley, the density of wildlife in the area, Yorke Bay Gentoo colony is closed to public access and is declared an infected place.

    On Wednesday, 15 October, swabs from 3 dead Gentoo penguins from Yorke Bay returned positive results for highly pathogenic avian influenza. On Sunday, 12 October, more than one hundred carcasses were observed at the site, with several more symptomatic individuals also counted. Estimated further mortality for the week of 13 October exceeded the threshold for review of current management.

    HMS Westminster heads for retirement and disposal as she's towed to Portsmouth

    Known as the 'capital ship' throughout the Royal Navy, she visited the Falklands on more than one occasion when on South Atlantic patrol (Pic MoD)

    The former Royal Navy frigate HMS Westminster has been towed out of Devonport on her way to Portsmouth, where she will be prepared for disposal.  She joins HMS Argyll, HMS Montrose, and HMS Northumberland, as the Navy continues to retire its older Type 23 frigates, reports Forces News.

    British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has officially launched its 2025/26 Antarctic field season

    The Falklands flagged polar research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough, where BAS scientists conduct multi-disciplinary research studying the ocean, seafloor, ice and atmosphere.

    October 16 marked the arrival of the first aircraft at Rothera Research Station and the departure of the Falklands-flagged RRS Sir David Attenborough from the UK. The new season brings a full schedule of ambitious science, deep-field exploration, and major infrastructure milestones across the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic.

    Craig Walding, Director at ONE and their Client Lead for the Falkland Islands, commented: “This has been an incredible project working with a fantastic team on the Islands”.

    Tussac House, the first purpose-built extra care facility for the Falkland Islands, has recently won two prestigious awards and is shortlisted for another. The building was awarded the national Structural Timber Awards Healthcare Project of the Year and is shortlisted for Healthcare Estates’ New Build of the Year award, which will be judged later this month (October 2025).
