    The Falklands penguins that would not explode

    The Falklands and the efforts to clear minefields left by the Argentine invasion in 1982, which have become de facto nature reserves for penguins, will be aired on BBC Radio 4 under the heading of “Listen to Exploding Penguins”, presented by Peter Gibbs and produced by Matthew Teller. The presentation will be Tuesday 9 May at 15:30 UK time.

    M/V Reefer Uruguay in emergency heading for Falklands, was abandoned heavily trimmed by the bow

    All crew of 42 people from M/V Reefer Uruguay have been safely transferred onboard escorting vessel M/V Taganrogskiy Zaliv.

    The “M/V Reefer Uruguay” which last Friday suffered a serious intake of water while sailing in the south west Atlantic and decided in emergency to head for the Falkland Islands, on Sunday it was abandoned following the rescue of its crew, and currently is being monitored by a second vessel, according to a press release from Baltmed Reefer Services Ltd.

    Falklands meat export season considered “good”, 626 tons

    Production for the season was 144 tons of lamb and 482 tons of mutton. There had also been a few new customers including the Grand Canaries and Reunion Island.

    More than 40,000 animals were processed during the last Falkland Islands Meat Company season. FIMCO Operations Manager Dave Roberts commented that the 2017 export season began with the staff arriving on January 21. A high percentage of them returned from previous seasons to the Sandy Bay plant.

    Reefer in distress heading for the Falklands; scheduled to arrive Saturday morning

    The “Uruguay Reefer” called for help when she was sailing some 100 nautical miles west from Elephant Island.

    A Panama flagged merchant vessel with a crew of 42 sailing in the South Atlantic sent a distress call following “a massive intake of water” in one of its holds, but will attempt to reach the Falkland Islands on its own means, according to a Friday report from the Argentine navy.

    Falkland Islands basin shows signs of being among world's largest craters

    A basin in the Falkland Islands exhibits traits of a large impact crater, according to a new analysis by a team of United States, Argentine and Paraguayan scientists. The structure measures approximately 250 kilometers, or more than 150 miles, in diameter and is described in the latest issue of the journal Terra Nova.

    Falklands oil exploration: Maersk denies in Argentine court any involvement since 2011

    “Since 2011 Maersk, and its subsidiaries have not participated in any hydrocarbons exploration or exploitation activities in the Malvinas Islands”, said the release

    Danish shipping company Maersk has denied involvement in any offshore exploration/exploitation activities in the Falkland Islands, since specific legislation was passed by the Argentine congress. The Argentine Chamber of Tugs accused the Danish company of violating legislation referred to oil industry operations in the disputed South Atlantic Islands.

    Falklands discusses Brexit impact on environmental funding with UKOTs

    MLA Michael Poole confirmed he joined remotely for a session about the ‘Green Economy’ and funding for environmental matters.

    The consequences of the UK leaving the European Union on environmental funding of UK Overseas Territories (UKOTs) which includes the Falklands, was the subject of a meeting in Aldernay between representatives of 11 territories last week.

    Falklands' lawmaker underlines “visas are our business”

    Last week PN reported some MLAs approved the idea of issuing Argentine visitors with visas in order to control the size of groups of Argentines visiting at one time.

    ”Visas are a matter for the Falkland Islands Government to determine,” confirmed Member of Legislative Assembly Mike Summers this week.Reacting to a story in last Friday’s Penguin News the Argentine Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra claimed in the Argentine press it was not for the Islanders but the UK government to make decisions over visas.

    Falklands' cruise season totaled 55.633; expedition ships market expands 17.2%

    Two thirds of all passengers arrived on just three vessels, the Zaandam, Crown Princess, and Norwegian Sun.

    The Falkland Islands cruise season came to a close last month with 55,633 passenger arrivals visiting the Islands, only slightly fewer than the 56,476 who visited the previous season, reports this week's edition of Penguin News.
