  Falklands names new Director of Health and Social Services

  

  The Falkland Islands Government announced the appointment of David Jenkins to the post of Director of Health and Social Services. David, the current Director of Health and Education, will take up his new role with effect from January 2013 following a restructure which will see Education form a separate Directorate.

  HMS Dauntless called in Colombia and joined major UNITAS naval exercise

  

  After a major naval exercise in the Caribbean with the participation of 13 warships from several countries of the Americas and following some anti-drugs patrolling in the Caribbean HMS Dauntless is expected back in Portsmouth at the end of October.

  Argentine marine who headed invasion of the Falklands on 2 April, dies

  

  The Rear Admiral who headed the landing and invasion of the Argentine forces in the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982 died over the weekend. Carlos Büsser was under house arrest for his alleged participation in crimes against humanity during the last military dictatorship although he was never convicted.

  Falkland Islands 2012/13 cruise ship season brings new luxury visitors

  

  Luxury super yacht MY Sherakhan, is one of four vessels new to the Falkland Islands visiting in the 2012/13 season beginning next month. More often spotted in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, she also ventures further afield to Patagonia, Antarctica, French Polynesia, Asia, and Panama.

  Falklands’ lawmaker anticipates cracks in Argentina’s blockade of the Islands

  Falklands’ lawmakers at party conference meet Argentine ambassador Castro

  

  The Falkland Islands Government stand at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Brighton welcomed a number of senior party members including the leader Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and the Argentine ambassador in London, Alicia Castro who was also attending the event.

  UK to Cristina: “no Falklands’ sovereignty negotiations unless and until the Islanders so wish”

  

  “There can be no negotiations on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands unless and until such time as the Islanders so wish” was the official reply from the UK to remarks made by Argentine president Cristina Fernandez during her speech on Tuesday before the UN General Assembly.

  Argentina calls on UK for talks on ‘global issue’ Malvinas and ‘demilitarization’ of South Atlantic

  

  President Cristina Fernández once again claimed Argentina’s sovereignty over the Falklands/Malvinas islands and urged the United Kingdom to accept talks and abide by the United Nations resolutions on the matter which has become a “global issue”. The Argentine leader also asked for the demilitarization of the South Atlantic.

  HMS Edinburgh on South Atlantic patrol; last deployment for Type 42 destroyers

  

  The Royal Navy’s destroyer HMS Edinburgh left on Monday Portsmouth on her final planned deployment. It marks a historic milestone for both the ship and the Royal Navy as it will be the last time a Type 42 destroyer deploys on operations as they make way for the new-generation Type 45 destroyers.
