    More EU funds to scrap hake fleet ...

    The European Commission is following the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform with a proposal to create an additional EUR 32 million fund for decommissioning hake and cod vessels by reprogramming structural funds for the period 2004-2006. The proposal, subject to Council of Ministers and European Parliament approval, aims to redirect Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) vessel construction and modernisation funds towards fleet reduction

    Argentina celebrated over the week end the 99th anniversary of its presence in Antarctica. On February 22, 1904, a group of Argentines began managing the Weather and Magnetic Observatory in Laurie Island, belonging to the South Orkney that had been originally established by a Scottish expedition.

    Argentina licences for 106 jiggers

    Despite objections, Argentine authorities are allowing 15 bare boat jigger charters to participate in this year's squid harvest in Argentine waters. The Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) decided that a fleet of 57 registered jiggers, plus the 19 jiggers that were added for the current season and a bare boat chartered jigger fleet of up to 30 vessels was compatible with a sustainable fishery.
