  A key intergovernmental forum on fisheries and aquaculture has endorsed new voluntary guidelines governing the transfer of fish between ships, in a move aimed at curbing the Illegal Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing that threatens the sustainability of global stocks.

  Argentina's eight month fisheries landings down 29%; squid the bright spot

  

  Argentina has released primary figures of fisheries landings in the first eight months of the year, (Jan/August 31) which show a significant overall drop compared to a year ago, 564,685.6 tons and 796,813.1, that is 29,13% less. However squid has done very well, hake hubbis landings also increased while shrimp and croaker the most common species experienced a considerable fall.

  Greenpeace dropped a chain of boulders in UK's MPA South West Deeps to prevent industrial trawling

  

  Greenpeace UK activists have dropped boulders into the English Channel at the South West Deeps (190 kilometers south of Land's End Cornwall) to prevent industrial trawling. The South West Deeps is one of the UK’s Marine Protected Areas and Greenpeace says the boulder barrier will stop industrial bottom trawlers from dragging weighted nets across the sea floor.

  Falklands' Beauchene Fishing orders a new trawler to replace “Baffin Bay” sunk in Vigo

  

  Galicia's Copemar and their Falkland Islands partner Beauchene Fishing have contracted Armón Vigo, an affiliate of the Asturian Naval Group Armon, for the construction of a trawler to replace the “Baffin Bay” which caught fire and sunk in the port of Vigo on its return from the Loligo season in the Islands.

  Chilean congress has two years to rewrite a new Fisheries bill

  

  The Chilean Lower House approved a bill repealing the “Fisheries Law”, better known as the “Longueira Law” since he was the great sponsor and defender of the legislation when he was the Economy minister. The repeal initiative received 117 votes, no nays, and twenty abstentions. The bill now begins to be discussed in the Chilean Senate.

  Brazil's incipient fish farmed exports in the second half to 2022, doubled in value and increased 14% in volume compared to Jan/July 2021. In effect sales reached US$ 14,3 million, from US$ 7,2 million y-to-y, with volume increasing to 4,931 tons from 4,327 tons.

  Uruguay's DINARA requests additional data in Chinese jigger incident

  

  Uruguay's National Directorate of Aquatic Resources (DINARA) Chief Jaime Coronel has told reporters all the evidence submitted by Uruguayan Navy authorities was being analyzed in the case of a Chinese fishing trawler caught while performing illegal catches in territorial waters earlier this month.
