  New research shows that slow growth in Antarctic fish is linked to problems making proteins

  

  Antarctic fish have adapted over millennia to survive in the freezing temperatures of the Southern Ocean but in doing so have lost their ability to grow at rates seen in their warmer water cousins.  Researchers have now discovered the cellular causes of this crucial difference between Antarctic and warm water fish.

  China's fisheries policy changing? Diverting fuel subsidies from vessels to good WTO fishing practices

  

  China is growing up to its international commitments: two coastal provinces following instructions from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs have started to award “fishery stewardship subsidies” to its vessels depending on how they implement measures such as catch volumes, respecting opening and closure of seasons, during the previous year.

  Uruguayan fish processing plants blame unions for the dismantling the industry

  

  The Uruguayan Fishing Industry Chamber, CIPU announced one of its associates had been forced to send 80 workers to unemployment insurance because it run out of fish to process, as a result of the conflict in fishing vessels. The Chamber claimed that in a decade the fishing industry has been cut to half because of the ongoing labor conflicts.

  Spanish sailors in Falklands honor their fellow crew members from Villa de Pitanxo lost off Newfoundland

  “The worst tragedy of our fishing fleet in 38 years”, Spanish Fisheries minister

  

  Spain's Fisheries Minister Luis Planas has called the sinking of the “Villa de Pitanxo“ off the coast of Canada the ”worst tragedy for our fishing fleet in 38 years”. At least nine sailors have died and a dozen remain missing after the vessel fishing for black halibut sank on Monday night early Tuesday some 450 kilometers from Newfoundland.

  Canada's naval authorities have stopped searching for survivors of the Spanish fishing trawler “Villa de Pitanxo” which sank abruptly off Newfoundland Tuesday, it was announced.

  Mourning in Galicia following the loss of a trawler off Newfourndland: ten dead and eleven missing

  

  The Xunta of Galicia, the government of the northeast of Spain will declare a day of mourning in the region following the sinking of the trawler “Villa de Pitanxo”, off Newfoundland, with the loss of ten lives and another eleven who remain missing. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday in the midst of a North Atlantic storm, and despite a huge rescue effort only three out of 24 crew members managed to survive under hypothermal conditions.
