Local transmission of monkeypox confirmed in Brazil

The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro Friday confirmed the existence of local transmission of the monkeypox virus, after two more cases were detected in men aged 25 and 30 without either a recent travel record or contact with anyone with one.

Antarctic Treaty members agree to protect Shackleton's Endurance wreck 3.000 meters deep in the Weddell Sea

A 500m perimeter is being implemented to aid the protection of Endurance, the ship famously lost in the Antarctic by explorer Ernest Shackleton. The vessel's position on the Weddell Sea floor was finally identified in March, 107 years after its sinking.

WHO admits that antibiotic resistance is winning the innovation battle

Development of new antibacterial treatments is inadequate to address the mounting threat of antibiotic resistance, according to the annual pipeline report by the World Health Organization. The 2021 report describes the antibacterial clinical and preclinical pipeline as stagnant and far from meeting global needs. Since 2017 only 12 antibiotics have been approved, 10 of which belong to existing classes with established mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
