  Brazil on Tuesday defended its decision to allow British military aircraft flying to the Falkland Island to call at Brazilian airports, landings that annoyed Argentina. The complaint is not new, and Brazilian policy under different governments over the years has been one of accepting those calls.

  Xiaomi to assemble cell phones in Tierra del Fuego

  Acoustic survey finds twilight zone in Southern ocean an emporium of fish, BAS report

  

  A new study highlights there could be up to four times more fish in the mesopelagic, or ‘twilight’, zone of the Southern Ocean than previously thought. Scientists at British Antarctic Survey and Bristol University discovered that by accounting for different acoustic properties of fish, the biomass, or total weight, of mesopelagic fish is likely to be 1.8 – 3.6 times higher than they previously calculated.

  South Sandwich hidden magnitude-8.2 earthquake source of mysterious 2021 global tsunami

  

  By American Geophysical Union – Scientists have uncovered the source of a mysterious 2021 tsunami that sent waves around the globe. In August 2021, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit near the South Sandwich Islands, creating a tsunami that rippled around the globe. The epicenter was 47 kilometers below the Earth's surface—too deep to initiate a tsunami—and the rupture was nearly 400 kilometers long, which should have generated a much larger earthquake.

  World food prices rebounded in January with strong demand for vegetable oils, FAO report

  

  The gauge for world food prices went up in January, largely catalyzed by supply-side constraints for vegetable oils, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 135.7 points in January, 1.1 percent higher than in December. The Index tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly-traded food commodities.

  Saskatchewan to lift all Covid-19 restrictions following protests

  

  The Canadian province of Saskatchewan will lift as of midnight next Sunday all originally imposed as a responde to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was announced Tuesday. The new measures are a consequence of protests demanding a new approach at the disease, which is currently less severe as opposed to the economic consequences stemming from lockdowns and other limitations imposed on people.
