    Ecuadorean health authorities have reported that the new FLiRT (KP.2) variant of Covid-19 had reached the country after two individuals -a 24-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman- tested positive in the Cotopaxi province. Both patients were vaccinated, the Health Ministry also noted. Local experts recalled that although not lethal, FLiRT was highly contagious, and therefore insisted on the importance of personal hygiene.

    Beryl makes landfall in Mexico

    A projected trajectory pattern showed the Texas coast was next

    After leaving at least three people dead in Jamaica, Beryl made landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale Friday on the Mexican coast. It eventually downgraded to a tropical storm, although it continued to pose a serious risk with heavy storms and damaging waves, authorities warned residents. According to Mexico's National Water Commission (Conagua), Beryl winds reached 175 km/h with peaks of 220 km/h. Classes were suspended as of Thursday.

    Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was recovering well Tuesday after undergoing hip surgery following a fall at his home where he has been residing since his release from the Barbadillo prison, his daughter and former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori confirmed on social networks. He had been sentenced in 2009 to 25 years in prison for aggravated homicide in the Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres.

    Hurricane Beryl marks early season beginning

    Beryl caused significant damage in Grenada killing at least three and is expected to hit Mexico and Belize later this week

    After reaching category 5 in the Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl was not feared to reach Colombia's Caribbean shores but would nevertheless significantly affect navigation in the area. Strong winds hit Jamaica late Monday, sweeping away power lines and flooding the streets of other islands such as Grenada, it was also reported.

    Bolivia's Foreign Ministry Monday said that comments from the Office of Argentine President Javier Milei on the June 26 attempted coup d'état in La Paz were “unfriendly” and “reckless.” Casa Rosada had contended that the military uprising had been staged and therefore calling it a revolt was a “false denunciation.”

    Argentine President Javier Milei will not be traveling to Asunción for the upcoming Mercosur Summit in the Paraguayan capital on July 8 in a move to avoid meeting face-to-face with his Brazilian colleague Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom he dubbed a “corrupt Communist” during his campaign last year and who insists an apology is in order. Last week the Argentine leader claimed there was nothing to be sorry for and that he would not go back on telling the truth. Foreign Minister Diana Mondino will represent Milei at the regional bloc's gathering.
