Significant Caricom summit underway with an eye on Haiti

The 45th Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) began Monday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, marking the 50th anniversary of the signing of the bloc's foundational Treaty of Chaguaramas. The event was also attended by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Equal pay bill signed into law in Brazil

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Monday signed into law a bill granting male and female workers equal pay for the same job position, it was reported in Brasilia. Lula insisted he would “enforce” this measure, which “cannot be violated or circumvented” under any circumstances.

No progress achieved during Argentina's presidency of Mercosur, Bustillo says

Marcelo Orrego of Unidos por San Juan (USJ) won Sunday's gubernatorial elections in the Argentine province of San Juan, it was reported. USJ is affiliated with the opposition Together for Change (Juntos por el Cambio - JxC) alliance at a national level. Peronist candidate José Luis Gioja of the Frente San Juan por Todos acknowledged defeat.

Orkney Islands councilor feels Scotland has failed them dreadfully and suggests joining Norway

The Orkney Islands could change their status in the UK or even become a self-governing territory of Norway under new proposals.
