  Sustainable Fisheries at South Georgia MPA

  

  Sue Gregory has worked as the GSGSSI Senior Marine & Fisheries Manager for the past 8 years. Prior to that Sue worked as a fisheries ecologist on the South Georgia Project at the British Antarctic Survey for many years, including overwintering on South Georgia, conducting research surveys and acting as a scientific observer on Southern Ocean commercial fishing vessels In the following GSGGSSI Newsletter, Sue relates her experience.

  Argentine fishing research campaign in South Georgia Islands completed

  

  A research expedition in the South Atlantic to further explore the oceanographic fishing scenario around the South Georgia Islands ended “satisfactorily” despite the “extreme” hydro-meteorological, environmental, and topographic conditions of the area, the Argentine Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MINCyT) announced this week.

  The government of the United States has been praised by The Pew Charitable Trusts for its decision to co-lead in matters concerning Southern Ocean Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), special climate envoy John Kerry announced during a virtual ministerial meeting hosted by the European Union.

  CCAMLR begins annual meeting hoping to agree on MPA in East Antarctica

  

  The Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, known as CCAMLR, began this week its annual meeting in Hobart, Tasmania. The 25-member organization - which was established with the objective of conserving Antarctic marine life - has been at a seven-year stalemate which has held up the designation of a marine protected area in East Antarctica.

  HMS Protector in New Zealand as part of her Southern Ocean patrol

  

  HMS Protector has arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand, as part of her historic Southern Ocean patrol.   Ice Patrol HMS Protector concludes historic five week patrol to East Antarctica and Ross Sea

  

  The Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol ship has just completed a historic five week patrol to the East Antarctic and Ross Sea. HMS Protector is the first Royal Navy, or UK Government, vessel to have visited the region in 80 years or to have travelled so far south having dipped below 77 degrees latitude.
