  Expedition will try to recreate 1916 Shackleton epic in replica of the James Caird

  Brazil approved the allocation of 40 million Reais (approx 22 million dollars) to rebuild and modernize the country’s Antarctic research station Comandante Ferraz which was destroyed during a fire last month.

  UK Science minister calls in the Falklands en route to Antarctica tour

  

  Science and Universities Minister David Willetts has become the latest UK politician to visit the Falklands. A spokesman for Mr Willetts said he would make on Thursday a “transiting visit” en route to an engagement in Antarctica.

  HMS Protector cuts through Antarctic ice and visits remote research bases

  

  HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's ice patrol ship, has cut through the ice floes of Antarctica for the first time. The icebreaker arrived in Antarctica for the first time two weeks ago and is following up important survey work for shipping in the region with visits to remote research bases locked in the frozen continent.

  US and Russia joint team to inspect all foreign installations in Antarctica

  

  United States and the Russian Federation will send a joint team to inspect foreign stations, installations and equipment in Antarctica from January 23 to January 28, 2012. The inspection will be conducted pursuant to the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 and its Environmental Protocol.

  Norwegian expedition unable to re-edit Amundsen’s South Pole 1911 feat

  

  The Norwegian expedition which was planning to celebrate the centenary of the South Pole discovery by Ronald Amundsen failed in their last leg of their mission with two of them abandoning and the other two not reaching on time for Wednesday’s party with Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
