  HMS Protector back in Portsmouth after seven months in Antarctica duties

  

  Royal Navy ice patrol ship HMS Protector returned to Portsmouth on June 27 from her maiden deployment. The 5.000-ton ice-breaker spent most of her seven months away surveying and patrolling the Antarctic Peninsula.

  Wild Viking being held in Puerto Williams

  

  Norwegian rogue yachtsman Jarle Andhøy, 34, along with four other crew members on the 54-foot yacht steel yacht Nilaya - who were arrested last week by the Chilean Navy - are being held at the Chilean Naval base in Puerto Williams, after apparently after giving a false name for the vessel when hailed by the Chilean Navy according to press reports from Chile and New Zealand over the weekend.

  Brazilian yacht sinks crushed by Antarctic ice close to Chilean base

  

  The Chilean Navy on Sunday released images of the Brazilian Yacht ‘Endless Sea’ which sank on Saturday in Antarctica. The photo shows the boat stuck in ice at Maxwell Bay, Ardley Cove, in front of the Chilean Antarctic base Presidente Eduardo Frei, reported Brazilian online media.

  Campaign for Antarctic Marine Reserve launched

  

  The Antarctic Ocean Alliance, a coalition of 16 environmental groups, has launched a campaign calling for the full protection of 3.6 million square kilometres of the Ross Sea, as well as the creation of the 18 more reserves in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica.

  Maverick Norwegian yachtsman Jarle Andhoy is in trouble again.

  

  According to press reports from Norway and New Zealand over the weekend, the 54-foot yacht steel yacht Nilaya is reported to be sailing off Antarctica with a broken boom and is heading for an unspecified Argentine Antarctic base to carry out emergency repairs and to refuel.

  British explorer becomes first woman to cross the Antarctic continent

  

  British explorer Felicity Aston has reached Antarctica's Hercules Inlet, becoming the first woman to cross the continent alone. “Congratulations to the 1st female to traverse Antarctica SOLO.V proud,” her UK support team tweeted late on Sunday.
