Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands Government elected Legislative Assembly has announced that the following program has been arranged for Thursday 8 December 2022 to commemorate the victory of the Naval engagements of 8th December 1914, on which day 6 British sailors lost their lives and a number of others died later from injuries received during the battle. 2,260 German sailors also lost their lives.
‘The hunt for Germany’s lost battleships’ a documentary based on Mensun Bound’s search for the lost fleet from the Battle of the Falklands was shown at a premiere at the British Film Institute, London on October 16.
The Falkland Islands Government & Treasury have issued a new £2 coin which commemorates the Centennial of the Battle of the Falkland Islands. At the start of World War I in 1914, the Falkland Islands was an important strategic naval base that allowed crucial control of the British Royal Navy of the South Atlantic and the Magellan Strait connecting with the Pacific.
The Falkland Islands will commemorate on Sunday the naval engagement of 8th December 1914 when the Royal Navy sunk with a minimum loss of life the German fleet, an event which until Liberation Day, 14 June 1982, was the most outstanding of the Islands calendar.
At the invitation of Mensun Bound, some twenty-five people, including three members of the Falklands elected Legislative Council met to consider ways in which the one hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands should be marked, when it falls on December 8, 2014.
