  British politics risks being “infected by the contagion” of fake news stories, a senior Labour MP has said. Michael Dugher said the problem was not confined to the US and news outlets everywhere had a duty to scrutinise politicians on the basis of “truth and reality” not “click-bait nonsense”.

  The BBC agreed to pay 185,000 pounds to a former treasurer of Britain's Conservative Party wrongly accused of child sex abuse as a result of one of its reports. The settlement came as media reports said one of the BBC's former stars had been arrested as part of an ongoing police investigation into sex crimes centred on the publicly funded broadcaster.

  BBC presenter sexual abuse scandal widens, with 300 possible victims

  

  The number of possible sexual abuse victims of BBC TV presenter and DJ Jimmy Savile has risen to 300, Scotland Yard has confirmed. Savile who died last year aged 84, may have abused scores of young girls and some boys over a 40-year period.
