    IAATO estimates 46.385 visitors to Antarctica during the 2017/18 season

    Overall, levels of visitation, particularly in the cruise sector of the industry, has been increasing steadily since 2011-2012.

    The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) announced its tourism figures for the 2016-2017 Antarctic season at the start of its annual meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, May 2/7. Members are gathered to discuss safe, environmentally responsible Antarctic tourism, including a multi-dimensional approach to managing for growth that will keep activities both safe and sustainable.

    IAATO celebrates 25th anniversary with record number or participants; Bob Simpson reappointed

    “There was a great sense of unity and achievement in the room when the meeting closed”, said Bob Simpson, Chair of IAATO’s Executive Committee.

    The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) has concluded its 25th anniversary meeting in Newport, Rhode Island, USA with a record number of participating members. Sixty-nine members attended, agreeing on changes to membership structure and outcomes that strengthen the association’s ability to achieve its mission of promoting the practice of safe, environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic.

    IAATO agrees to ban recreational use of UAVs in Antarctica’s coastal areas

    The UAV's ban will be reviewed next year to allow for potential technological advances and further developments within the regulatory community.

    International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) members have agreed that, for the 2015-16 season, they will not allow the recreational use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in the unique, and often wildlife rich, coastal areas of Antarctica.
