Buenos Aires' cruise season has kicked off with the arrival at the Argentine capital's river port of the US-flagged World Navigator carrying some 100 passengers from Europe, the United States and Canada.
An Antarctica cruise company, Atlas Ocean Voyages will begin operating from Ushuaia, the capital of the extreme south Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego. According to local media reports, the first call out of fifteen will take place next November.
Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina have announced the vaccine certificates and protocols which will be demanded from cruise vessel passengers and crewmembers this coming summer season if they are to call in the three countries as part of their South American tours.
It's official, Argentina announced the opening of the 2021/2022 bi-oceanic and Antarctic cruise season next 20 October. The administrative resolution 834/2021 was published in the Official Gazette, triggering immediate satisfaction from Tierra del Fuego province whose governor contacted the Tourism and Sports minister Matías Lammens.
Punta Arenas port authorities announced over the weekend that they expect the 2021/22 cruise season to begin next 19 October when “Sylvia Earle” calls at Chile's extreme south terminal. She will be the first of some 226 calls, so far, from forty international cruise vessels to which must be added those from domestic companies.
At the extreme end of Argentina in a city known as “The End of the World,” many thought they might be spared from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic. Sitting far from Buenos Aires, health workers in Ushuaia were initially able to contain a small outbreak among foreigners hoping to catch boats to the Antarctic at the start of the crisis.
The head of the port's administration of Puerto Madryn, in Argentine Patagonia, said that so far the coming 2020/21 cruise season “stands”, and the first vessel is scheduled to call in the Chubut province maritime terminal next 25 October, despite the pandemic.

Representatives from all sectors of the Falkland Islands tourism industry met at Government House on Wednesday evening for the annual presentation of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board (FITB) awards and to celebrate a cruise ship season which brought 62,505 passengers to the islands.
“This is one of the best cruise seasons we've had in years”, said Tierra del Fuego governor Rosana Bertone underlining that tourism is an industry which creates jobs and helps the province's economy. Ms Bertone made the statement during a visit to the port of Ushuaia where she attended the departure of the “Celebrity Eclipse” and welcomed the French flagged “Le Soleil”
