    Cuba going through one of its worst electricity-generation crises

    The island is heavily dependent on imported oil, which has been arriving in smaller quantities due to economic hardships

    Cuba has been reported to be facing severe power outages after the unexpected breakdown of the Felton 1 Thermoelectric Power Plant, worsening the situation in Havana and other parts of the island. The State-run National Electric Union (UNE) said numerous generation plants were out of service due to fuel shortages, local authorities blaming the US economic blockade for their hardships, when in reality infrastructure failures and poor maintenance to already obsolete equipment were other contributing factors. A total of 57 generation plants in the country, in addition to two floating units, were affected by the lack of fuel.

    Obama praised the 'new beginning' in the bilateral relation with Cuba

    The political “shift” represents as well an opportunity of more investments, more trade and cultural exchange for the Caribbean nation, said Obama.

    United States President Barack Obama addressed American leaders in the meeting currently taking place in the City of Panama praising the diplomatic rapprochement between Washington and Cuba which he called “a new beginning” in the bilateral relation.

    UN assembly (188 out of 193 countries) condemns US embargo on Cuba

    “Right now 77% of Cubans were born under these conditions, Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez told the Assembly”

    The United Nations General Assembly for the 21st time on Tuesday condemned the economic and trade embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba, a policy that has been in place for over half a century. 188 countries out of 193 voted against the restrictions imposed by Washington against Cuba, which date back to 1962, three years after Fidel Castro took power in a revolution.
