    Avian flu and Newcastle in the US, force Mexico to increase chicken import quota

    While boosting overall imports, Mexico also banned chicken product imports from several U.S. counties, citing a reported outbreak of Newcastle disease.

    The Mexican government increased its tariff-free chicken import quota by 55,000 tons due to crimped domestic production amid avian flu outbreaks.

    Cancer burden rises to 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million cancer deaths in 2018

    One in 5 men and one in 6 women worldwide develop cancer during their lifetime, and one in 8 men and one in 11 women die from the disease

    The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released on Wednesday the latest estimates on the global burden of cancer. The GLOBOCAN 2018 database, accessible online as part of the IARC Global Cancer Observatory, provides estimates of incidence and mortality in 185 countries for 36 types of cancer and for all cancer sites combined. An analysis of these results, published today in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, highlights the large geographical diversity in cancer occurrence and the variations in the magnitude and profile of the disease between and within world regions.

    Measles spreads again in the Americas

    The region had finally been declared free of the disease by an International Committee of Experts in 2016 after 22 years of mass vaccination.

    After being the first continent in the world declared free of measles in 2016, nine countries in the region have registered cases last year. With almost 900 cases, Venezuela was the most affected. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warns that the countries of the region should intensify their efforts to immunize the population and stop the spread of the disease.
