  EU sustainable fishing fails because of fleet overcapacity, says Court of Auditors

  

  The European Court of Auditors, evaluating whether EU measures have contributed to adapting the capacity of EU fishing fleets to available fishing opportunities concluded that current measures have “failed” mostly blaming the ongoing overcapacity of the fishing fleet.

  Argentine fish exports stable at 365.372 tons during first ten months of 2011

  

  Argentina exported 365.372 tons of fish and shellfish valued at 1.16 billion dollars in the first ten months of 2011, according to statistics from the National Health Service and Food Quality, Senasa. Hake, shrimp and squid were the three main items in that order.

  Argentine patrols harass Falklands’ licensed jiggers outside the port of Montevideo

  

  Spanish jiggers operating in the South Atlantic with Falkland Islands licences complain they are been harassed by the Argentine Navy just a few miles away from the port of Montevideo where they call for discharging, maintenance and bunkering.

  Deep sea fishing is ‘unsustainable’; efforts should concentrate on ‘productive local waters’

  

  A team of marine scientists is urging an end to most commercial fishing in the deep sea and instead recommending fishing in more productive and local waters. In their analysis published online in the journal ‘Marine Policy’, the team shows that all deep-sea fisheries are unsustainable.

  Argentina/Uruguay agree TACs for sharks and rays in common fishing zone

  

  Argentina and Uruguay have agreed on total allowable catches (TAC) of 4,000 tons and 9,000 tons for smooth-hound shark (Mustelus spp.) and ray (Rajidae) in the Common Fishing Zone (CFZ), which is shared by the neighbouring countries.

  Europe unveils plan to reform fishing industry and phase out ‘discards’

  

  European Commission has unveiled major plans to reform the EU fishing industry and stop catches being wasted. The proposal, due to take effect from 2013, would give fleets quota shares guaranteed for at least 15 years.

  Falklands, South Georgia success in minimizing long-line fishing seabird bycatch

  

  A study has revealed that at least 160,000 and potentially in excess of 320,000 seabirds are killed annually in longline fisheries globally. Some previous studies have assessed the level of seabird by catching longline fisheries for particular regions and groups of seabirds, but this is the first study to provide a global estimate of by-catch of all seabirds in longline fisheries.

  Argentine seafood exports down in volume but prices much stronger

  

  Argentina’s seafood exports in the first quarter of 2011 totalled 78,493 tons valued at 218 million US dollars which represents a 14.9% in volume (92.220 tons) and 3.3% in value (211 million USD), according to the latest release from the National Service for Food Health and Quality, Senada.
