A stamp has been issued to commemorate Gibraltar’s historic achievement of becoming the 54th Uefa member. The Government opted for a 54p value as Gibraltar is now the 54th member country. Gibraltar has been accepted as a full member of UEFA, European football's governing body. The application was approved on Friday on a majority vote at the organisation's congress in London, with no votes against and no abstentions.
The Spanish Government has declared that it will back legal action by the Spanish Football Federation to block Gibraltar’s membership of UEFA. “We will take the necessary measures in our power to avoid a situation which is contrary to the sporting strategy of the Spanish state.”
The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, has included Gibraltar in the Futsal qualifiers for the Euro 2013 Cup to be played in France next month and in the U17 and U19 tournaments to be disputed beginning next autumn. This is considered a remarkable step for Gibraltar’s football on the Uefa/GFA ‘road map’
