No fatalities as Hurricane Barry hits Louisiana but spares New Orleans

“We’re thankful that the worst-case scenario did not happen,” said Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards.

No serious injuries or major damage were reported as Barry reached the state of Louisiana Saturday as a Category 1 hurricane. It did not hit New Orleans directly but caused power cuts and brought floods to several areas along the southern part of the Mississippi River.

Lousiana takes Hurricane Barry threat seriously

Governor Edwards spoke of “a very, very significant hazard.”

Government officials are preparing for a heavy tropical storm or worse in New Orleans by Friday, as floods and heavy rains have battered the region for the past few hours, according to the United States' National Weather Service, which has warned that hurricane conditions were possible along the Gulf Coast as a “potential tropical cyclone” moved closer to land.
