  Brazil recognizes 6 indigenous territories

  

  Fulfilling a campaign promise, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Friday officially recognized approximately 207,199 hectares (800 square miles) of six ancestral territories, the two largest of which are in the Amazon, the world's largest rainforest and a key carbon absorption site that helps moderate climate change, it was reported.

  Brazil reinstates task force to tackle climate change

  

  Brazil's Environment Minister Marina Silva was joined by US Presidential Envoy John Kerry when she announced on Tuesday that the government of Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva was creating a working group to tackle the effects of climate change by focusing on the fight against deforestation in the Amazon and the defense of indigenous peoples, Agencia Brasil reported.

  Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Luís Roberto Barroso has ordered an investigation by the Attorney General of the Republic, the Military Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Justice and Public Safety, and the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police of Roraima into the possible participation of officials of the Jair Bolsonaro government in crimes of genocide, disobedience, breach of judicial secrecy, and environmental offenses related to the life, health, and safety of several indigenous communities, Agencia Brasil reported Tuesday.
