  China's “insatiable appetite” for seafood is straining the limited abilities of South American countries to enforce their maritime boundaries, according to an article in Dialogo, a website run by US Southern Command. Countries on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts have been affected, and most of the illicit fishing activity in those areas is done by Chinese vessels.

  Hundreds killed and injured after tsunami hits Indonesian coastal towns

  

  At least 220 people have been killed and 843 injured after a tsunami hit coastal towns on Indonesia's Sunda Strait government officials say. There was no warning of the giant waves which struck at Saturday night, destroying hundreds of buildings, sweeping away cars and uprooting trees.

  Dead sperm whale in Indonesia had kilos of plastic waste in its stomach

  

  A sperm whale found dead in a national park in Indonesia had nearly 6kg of plastic waste, including 115 cups, in its stomach, park officials said on Tuesday. The 9.5m whale was found in waters near Kapota Island, part of the Wakatobi National Park, southeast of Sulawesi, the park said in a statement.

  Mass graves were being readied for hundreds of victims of an Indonesian quake and tsunami on Monday as authorities battled to stave off disease and reach desperate people still trapped under shattered buildings. The death toll nearly doubled to 832 on Sunday but was expected to rise further after a disaster that has left the island of Sulawesi reeling.

  EU lifts anti-dumpling duties imposed on Argentine bio-diesel, as indicated by WTO

  

  European Union ambassadors agreed on Thursday to withdraw an appeal to the European Court of Justice meaning the bloc will have to accept its verdict annulling anti-dumping duties imposed on imports of biodiesel from Argentina and Indonesia.

  South Atlantic poacher Hua Li 8, arrested by Indonesian for illegal fishing

  

  Almost two months of efforts coordinated by Interpol with the cooperation of seven countries on four continents, the Indonesian Armed Forces arrested one of the most wanted poaching fishing vessels. On January 29, the Chinese flagged Hua Li 8 was detected fishing within the EEZ of Argentina, which triggered an immediate operation to arrest the vessel. But despite the display of patrol vessels and aircrafts, and warning shots, the vessel managed to escape.

  Indonesia sinks 23 foreign fishing vessels caught poaching, bringing the total to 170

  

  Indonesian authorities sank 23 foreign fishing boats this week saying they were “operating illegally in the archipelago's vast waters in continuation efforts for anti-poaching”, China's Xinhua news agency reported. This brings the number of vessels destroyed by the Government under the policy to more than 170.
