    Climate change will force King Penguins to move after food or face heavy losses

    For most colonies, the length of the summer trips by parents to get food will soon become so long that their offspring could starve while waiting

    Global warming is on track to wipe out 70% of the world's King penguins by century's end, putting the regal birds on a path towards extinction, researchers warned on Monday. As climate change drives away the fish and squid upon which the flightless creatures depend, the penguins must swim further afield to find sustenance for their hungry hatchlings on land.

    Falkland Islands issues four colorful coins featuring King penguins

    The seven-sided coin with a vivid color application features a large, adult male king penguin with his smaller female companion lovingly touching their beaks.

    The government and treasury of the Falkland Islands have issued (24th July) their latest coin in their hugely popular series of four coins highlighting the wonderful world of penguins—a species of bird found in significant numbers in the South Atlantic.

    Falklands celebrate Penguin Awareness Day, January 20

    As many as a million penguins nest in the Falklands every summer, representing five of the world’s species: King, Gentoo, Rockhopper, Magellanic and Macaroni.

    January 20 is Penguin Awareness Day. The day helps raise awareness about the flightless birds whose numbers are dwindling and also aims to bring international focus on the conservation of penguin habitats.

    April 25 is one of two days dedicated to the adorable, waddling birds. April 25 is World Penguin Day while January 20th is Penguin Awareness Day.In addition to two penguin days, there are believed to be 17 penguin species, ranging from the Little Blue Penguin to the mighty Emperor Penguin. And several of these are threatened by climate change.

    The world’s northernmost colony of king penguins has something to celebrate this week, as Tuesday marks Penguin Awareness Day and these well dressed seabirds play host to an international group of scientists gathered to discuss the Falkland Islands’ rich potential for new research.
