The Falkland Islands elected Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Thursday by Governor Nigel Haywood in advance of the General Election scheduled to be held on November 7.
In a brief message Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly made public its condolences to the family and friends of Admiral Sir Sandy Woodward who was commander of the carrier force sent to recover the Falklands invaded and occupied by Argentine forces.
The Governor of the Falkland Islands accepted Friday the resignation of Bill Luxton from the Falklands’ elected Legislative Assembly (MLA). Bill Luxton was elected for the Camp constituency and is the third member of the current Legislative Assembly that steps down: Glen Ross and Emma Edwards are the other two.
The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has eight members once again. Mike Summers, a veteran of Falklands’ affairs was sworn in as an MLA at an official ceremony held at Government House this Monday morning.
The Falklands are well defended, much better than in 1982, and the international opinion tide is turning “on our favour” said Dick Sawle, elected member of the Falklands’ Legislative Assembly recently back from a round of political contacts in New York and Washington.
The Falkland Islands Government has congratulated the new British Prime Minister David Cameron, Foreign Secretary William Hague and Defence Secretary Liam Fox on their appointments.
