  Former Interpol chief Meng Hongwei, who was detained on a visit to China in 2018, was sentenced on Tuesday (Jan 21) to more than 13 years in prison for bribery in a case that shook the international police organization.

  French police have opened an investigation into the whereabouts of the president of international police cooperation agency Interpol, after his wife reported he had gone missing after travelling home to his native China last week. The French interior ministry said on Friday his wife has been placed under protection after threats.

  The following editorial was published by The New York Times - Interpol, the international law enforcement agency, has had a history of allowing its international database of fugitives to be used by authoritarian governments to persecute dissidents and critics. It is therefore deeply troubling that a senior Chinese security official will become the organization’s next president.
