  Humala's wife arrives in Brazil, where she was granted asylum

  

  Former Peruvian First Lady Nadine Heredia arrived in Brazil on Wednesday after seeking asylum to avoid serving a 15-year prison sentence handed down on her and her husband Ollanta Humala, who has already been transferred to the Barbadilo prison already housing former heads of State Alejandro Toledo and Pedro Castillo Terrones.

  Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala sentenced to 15 years in jail

  

  Former Peruvian President Ollanta Humala and his ex-wife, Nadine Heredia, were sentenced to 15 years in prison for aggravated money laundering related to illicit funds used during the 2011 campaign. In both cases, their pretrial detention counts as time served. The couple denied all charges. Prosecutors had requested 20-year sentences.

  Ex Peruvian president Alan Garcia shoots himself in the head

  

  Former Peruvian President Alan García was reported to have died on Wednesday after shooting himself in the head minutes before a warrant for his arrest was to be executed. Alan Gabriel Ludwig García Pérez, 69, was president of Peru from 1985 to 1990 and from 2006 to 2011. He also served in Congress.

  The United Nations has postponed the promotion of former Peruvian first lady Nadine Heredia to a key post in the Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, in Geneva amid a money laundering investigation.   Peru’s Judiciary overturned an eight-year sentence against former president Alberto Fujimori for alleged diversion of public funds to tabloids to facilitate his second re-election in 2000. The Supreme Court said in a ruling “there isn’t enough material evidence” to declare any criminal responsibility of Fujimori, who is serving another 25-year sentence in prison for crimes against humanity.
