Argentina will create Antarctic Multidisciplinary Laboratories to further promote research in the country's bases in the white continent, in the framework of the program Building Science. The program is sponsored by the ministries of Foreign Affairs; Science, Technology and Innovation, and Defense, and has specific funds earmarked.
Argentine Navy's ARA Puerto Argentino sloop has sucessfully unloaded supplies and machinery this week at the Petrel Base in Antarctica, it was reported. A self-propelled pontoon built entirely at the Tandanor–CINAR shipyard was used for the reconstruction of this base, which is returning to permanent service after nearly 50 years.
Argentina's Defense Minister Jorge Taiana has announced the Petrel Base will be reopened following repairs as he oversaw the commencement of this season's Summer Antarctic Campaign.
Argentina's icebreaker Almirante Irizar is back in Buenos Aires at the end of its first Antarctic campaign in ten years, following the fire that almost knocked the Finnish built vessel out of action. She left on 26 December and completed 107 days in the high seas and Antarctica's ice.
