  UK Overseas Territories “fifth in world league table of bird extinctions”

  

  Put together the UK’s 16 Overseas Territories (including Falklands and South Georgia) are fifth in the world league table of bird extinctions, with at least ten species from the territories going to oblivion since 1500AD, partially or wholly because of the impact of non-native mammals, such as rats, feral cats, mice and pigs, according to BirdLife International site.

  Stamp release on wrecks and hulls depicts South Georgia’s whaling history

  

  A set of four stamps featuring some of the wrecks and hulks around South Georgia Island shores in the South Atlantic was released on June 25th. The release date was chosen to coincide with the midwinter full moon. The photographs used on the stamps were taken by Thies Matzen, who also wrote the text below, which was published in the June edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

  Healthy Surplus in South Georgia Finances, Spurred by Fishing, Tourism and Stamps

  

  The financial statements from the government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands ending December 2008 show a healthy surplus with fisheries licences, tourism and stamps, the three main sources of revenue.

  Falklands’ HMS Clyde Rescues Family from Sinking Iceberg Hit Yacht

  

  A British family has been rescued by the Falkland Islands Protection Vessel in the south Atlantic after their yacht hit an iceberg and began to sink. Carl Lomas and Tracey Worth, who are also known as Lord and Lady Hollinsclough, and their two daughters were sailing 300 miles north-east of South Georgia when their 18-metre boat hit the low-lying iceberg.

  Argentine Coast Guard to Monitor Vessels Travelling to and from Falklands

  

  Argentina made official this week the planned monitoring of vessels sailing between the mainland and the disputed Falkland Islands, the Coast Guard agency PNA said.
