  UN accepts extension of Uruguay's continental shelf to 350 miles; first in South America

  

  The United Nations accepted the proposition of the Uruguayan government to extend the Uruguayan territorial seabed from 200 to 350 miles. Uruguay thus becomes the first South American nation to receive the approval of the UN for such request.

  Russia refuses to free Greenpeace vessel ignoring UN maritime tribunal order

  

  The United Nations maritime tribunal has ordered Russia to free a Greenpeace vessel and 30 people detained after an oil drilling protest in the Arctic. The court in the German city of Hamburg said a bond of 3.6 million Euros should be posted.

  Paraguay’s incoming government foreign policy advisor Eladio Loizaga downplayed Mercosur veiled warning calling for a quick return of the country to the block because ‘Paraguay is landlocked and needs the Parana River and the River Plate to reach the sea’.

  Argentine deadline to Ghana for release of ARA Libertad

  

  Argentina warned on Monday that if by Tuesday Ghana does not release the retained Navy frigate ARA Libertad it will file a claim before the UN Law of the Sea International Tribunal in Germany.
