  St Helena prepares to commemorate the bicentennial of Napoleon's death

  

  By Nick Sundin – The United Kingdom commemorated in June 2015 the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, marking the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and the end of the Napoleonic Wars. In the months surrounding the bicentenary of 18th June 2015, battlefield visits abounded, with key sites in the vicinity of the battlefield and the town of Waterloo itself seeing large increases in tourism.

  UK will formally apply to join the Trans Pacific Partnership

  

  The United Kingdom will formally apply to join one of the world’s largest free-trade areas, deepening trade ties with some of the fastest-growing markets in the world. International Trade Secretary Liz Truss will speak to ministers in Japan and New Zealand to request to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), with formal negotiations set to start this year.

  EU will monitor (and block) coronavirus vaccine exports out of the continent

  

  The European Commission will monitor and in some cases block coronavirus vaccine exports out of the bloc since it installed a new mechanism on Friday. The move comes amid a row with the British-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca over vaccine deliveries.

  Falklands‘ sovereignty: in UN letter, UK makes clear to Argentina its historical and legal position

  

  Last 14 January, the United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the United Nations addressed a letter to the Secretary-General. The letter, in accordance with instructions received from the UK Government, was to refer to the letter dated 30 December 2020 from the Permanent Representative of Argentina to the United Nations, addressed to the Secretary-General.

  Johnson off to Scotland to confront growing support of independence referendum

  

  Prime Minister Boris Johnson is traveling on Thursday to Scotland to confront growing support for another independence referendum. Ahead of his visit, Johnson said that Scotland, as a part of the UK, gained access to a coronavirus vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, and they are being administered by their shared armed forces, who are creating 80 new vaccine centers in Scotland.
