  A second pulp mill is to break ground next January 16 in Uruguay, following an agreement reached between the Spanish corporation ENCE and the Uruguayan government, revealed the country's Deputy Housing and Environment minister Jaime Igorra.

  Uruguayan former military dictator charged and jailed

  

  Uruguay's last military dictator, former General Gregorio Alvarez, was charged Monday with the forced disappearance of political prisoners. Human rights activists who have long campaigned for his prosecution cheered on the news and the country's trade union confederation called for a march in support of democracy in downtown Montevideo.

  “Norwegian Dream” renamed “Norwegian Hell” by stranded cruise passengers in the port of Montevideo said they would be demanding Norwegian Cruise Lines because of the “bad service and treatment” they received during and after a minor collision suffered by the vessel when she was leaving for the South Atlantic.

  Cruise vessel Norwegian Dream finally returned to the port of Montevideo Tuesday evening after waiting 24 hours two miles offshore while the main channel of access to the port was surveyed and cleared of possible hazards.

  Three cruise vessels stranded at blocked Montevideo port

  

  The port of Montevideo remained closed on Tuesday to all vessels with a plus five meters draught following a collision on Monday afternoon, in the access channel to Uruguay's main sea terminal, between a cruise vessel carrying some 1.700 passengers and a barge loaded with containers.

  An estimated 1.8 million tourists will have visited Uruguay in 2007, a figure similar to that of last year, with income in the range of 750 million US dollars. However “prospects for 2008 are more encouraging given the increased connectivity of Uruguay in the region”, said on Tuesday Deputy Tourism minister Liliam Kechichian.
