Uruguay closes borders from 21 December to 10 January to help contain its Covid-19 first wave

Uruguay announced it will regulate the constitutional right to assembly when a sanitary emergency, lockdown access to the country from 21 December to 10 January, limit the number of passengers in long range transport, and have government staff take their annual vacation and those remaining, unless essential personnel, will work from their homes.

Argentina takes over the Mercosur chair for six months next 16 December

Uruguay will hand to Argentina next 16 December the pro tempore chair of the South American trade bloc Mercosur. The ceremony as happened six months before with Paraguay will be virtual given the coronavirus pandemic, according to a release from the Uruguayan Executive Office.

Uruguay's twice president Tabare Vazquez dies: kilometers of vehicles followed the funeral procession

Two times former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez died early morning Sunday in Montevideo at the age of 80 after suffering from lung cancer and pancreatic metastasis. By early afternoon and following on the family's wishes Vazquez was buried in a private ceremony at the La Teja cemetery, the working neighborhood where he grew up.

Uruguayan ex-president Tabaré Vázquez has died

Former Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez died on Sunday morning aged 80 from lung cancer, which he had been suffering from since 2019, in the final stretch of his second presidency. His successor, President Luis Lacalle Pou, announced three days of national mourning.

Uruguay/Google Tannat cable system links with Brazil and Argentina

The Tannat cable system connecting Uruguay and Brazil by sea has now been officially extended to Argentina. The cable is co-owned by Uruguay’s state-run telco Antel and by Google. Active since 2018, the 2,000km system links Maldonado, near Montevideo in Uruguay, to Praia Grande/Santos in Brazil’s São Paulo state.
