Brazilian economy registers worst quarterly decline since 1996

Brazil's economy suffered the worst decline in more than a decade in the last quarter of 2008, shrinking 3.6% from the previous quarter, official figures show. The fall ends a three year consistent growth, even when output for the whole of 2008 remained strong at 5.1%.

Global sea level rising faster than forecasted warn scientists

The global sea level looks set to rise far higher than forecast because of changes in the polar ice-sheets, a team of researchers has suggested. Scientists at a climate change summit in Copenhagen said earlier UN estimates were too low and that sea levels could rise by a metre or more by 2100.

Brazil adheres to FAO sponsored high-seas fishing agreement

Brazil openly backed the Compliance Agreement of the United Nation’s (UN) Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which aims to promote compliance of international conservation and governance measures by fishing vessels that operate on the high seas, as well as combat poaching activities.

Modern Commonwealth celebrates 60th anniversay with dedication to children

The British Commonwealth Day which this year marks the sixtieth anniversary of its creation was celebrated on Monday 9 March throughout the 53 countries of the Commonwealth. Two Falkland Islands students participated in this year’s program.
The theme for the anniversary of the modern Commonwealth and underlined in Queen Elizabeth II message, was “The Commonwealth @ 60: serving a new generation”.

Oil company closer to begin drilling in North Falklands basin

Rockhopper Exploration, the North Falkland Basin explorer announced Monday that Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) documents prepared by RPS Energy in relation to planned future drilling activity have been submitted to the Falkland Islands Government. The EIS’s cover licences PL023, PL024, PL032 and PL033.
