China thanked Uruguay for its staunch and sustained support in crucial issues such as the one-China policy and Tibet. Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and Uruguay’s Lower House president Roque Arregui, currently visiting China, met earlier this week in Beijing.

“China appreciates Uruguay’s staunch support on issues concerning our country’s core interests such as the Taiwan issue and Tibet-related issues”, said Wu. Arregui promised Uruguay will continue to adhere to the one-China policy.

Both lawmakers vowed to seek stronger legislative ties in an effort to bolster the overall bilateral relationship.

“The long-standing legislative exchanges between China and Uruguay have played a positive role in enhancing the two nations' friendship and bilateral relations,” said Wu.

He called on “both congress to continue multi-tier exchange and cooperation in different fields and learn from each other in governing the country plus enhancing democracy and building of legal systems so as to increase consultation in multilateral legislative organizations” thus enriching the overall China-Uruguay close relationship.

Arregui, who was on his first visit to China, said the Uruguayan legislature would like to boost bilateral cooperation in politics, trade and other fields.

On broader bilateral relations, Wu said China and Uruguay had made headway in deepening political trust, boosting economic and trade relations and promoting scientific and cultural exchanges.

“China would like to work with Uruguay to increase high-level exchanges, deepen trade ties and enrich people-to-people exchanges so as to usher in a new era of bilateral relations,” Wu said.

Arregui praised China's efforts to deal with the global financial crisis and take a lead in reviving the world’s economy, saying such endeavour benefited Uruguay and China's other trade partners, “injecting a huge momentum into the world economic recovery”.

Arregui is schedule to visit east China's Zhejiang province and the country's financial hub of Shanghai

I worked in the Reagan White House when Uruguay emerged from military dictatorship, and was involved with the country's return to democracy. So it saddens me to see a Uruguayan politician acknowledging China's dictatorial regime and giving credence to its suppression of democratic rights not only for Tibet, but for its own citizens. I can only hope he does not speak for the people of Uruguay. To see more about China's repression and how to fight back read my blog on www.FreeingTibet.com.

I fully agree with the above. As a note, ROC Taiwan is a full democracy and so has more in common with Uruguay than PR China.
