Argentina/China sign 18 agreements; discussions to solve soy-oil dispute
China and Argentina signed 18 agreements covering infrastructure, energy and railway projects on Tuesday during Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner second day official visit which included talks with her Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao and with Vice-Premier Hui Liangyu.

A country full of gratitude defies freezing weather to honour Uruguay’s soccer team
Tens of thousands of Uruguayans took to the streets of Montevideo defying freezing weather and polar gusts to cheer and honour the ‘sky blue’ national team which came back from South Africa with a fourth place and striker Diego Forlan with the Golden Ball as the World’s Cup's best player.

Massive demonstration in Argentina to protest same-sex marriage bill
Argentine Catholic and Evangelic organizations protested the same-sex marriage bill in a demonstration held in the heart of Buenos Aires at the Congress square under the motto “Kids have the right to have a mother and father.”

Stamp release on wrecks and hulls depicts South Georgia’s whaling history
A set of four stamps featuring some of the wrecks and hulks around South Georgia Island shores in the South Atlantic was released on June 25th. The release date was chosen to coincide with the midwinter full moon. The photographs used on the stamps were taken by Thies Matzen, who also wrote the text below, which was published in the June edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

Lula da Silva opens bid for a bullet train on time for the 2016 Summer Olympics
Brazilian President Lula da Silva launched Tuesday the bidding process for the construction of the high-speed rail service between the country’s two largest cities, Sao Paulo and Rio do Janeiro, which should be running by 2016 when Brazil hosts the Olympic Games.
