A country full of gratitude defies freezing weather to honour Uruguay’s soccer team

Tens of thousands of Uruguayans took to the streets of Montevideo defying freezing weather and polar gusts to cheer and honour the ‘sky blue’ national team which came back from South Africa with a fourth place and striker Diego Forlan with the Golden Ball as the World’s Cup's best player.

Stamp release on wrecks and hulls depicts South Georgia’s whaling history

A set of four stamps featuring some of the wrecks and hulks around South Georgia Island shores in the South Atlantic was released on June 25th. The release date was chosen to coincide with the midwinter full moon. The photographs used on the stamps were taken by Thies Matzen, who also wrote the text below, which was published in the June edition of the South Georgia Newsletter.

Argos Resources the latest company to announce it will begin oil exploration operations offshore the Falkland Islands was sent a letter by the Argentine embassy in London warning it “to abstain” from such activities otherwise “it will face legal actions”, according to reports in the Buenos Aires press.

Deepwater oil rig needed to drill in Falklands’ southern waters, confirms FOGL

Falkland Oil and Gas (FOGL) will press ahead with its drilling program offshore the Falkland Islands despite reporting that its Toroa F61/5-1 exploration well was dry. However FOGL, which is associated with Anglo-Australian mining giant BHP Billiton, said it will work first towards contracting a deepwater rig.

Chile clears minefields in Magallanes Region and Tierra del Fuego

Chile will announce this week that the extreme south of the country, in areas next to the border with Argentina, is free of antipersonnel mines. Chilean authorities consider this a major step to comply with the 2016 Ottawa convention timetable.
