VAT at 23%? Oh dear, far too high. Poor Uruguay, but at least giving a nod to economic reality with this relief.
Aug 03rd, 2013 - 02:28 am - Link - Report abuse 0Rule of thumb, the higher the VAT, the crappier a country gets. UK 8% in 1979, Thatcher hiked it to 15%, then Major to. 17.5%, a 15% gimmick under Brown and now with Cameron 20%.

VAT in Denmark for commodities - 25%
Both Sweden and Denmark are higher than the UK in any of your lots available lists...
So, if you think the UK is crappy, it has little to do with the VAT...
Stevie, I said 'the higher the VAT, the crappier a country gets'. Look at Sweden and Denmark before they had high VAT and compare. look at the UK now and when it had low or no VAT and you will see it getting crappier. Watch Sweden and Denmark as their economies crumble.
Aug 06th, 2013 - 12:15 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Sweden btw had lower overall tax rates thapn the UK right up to the mid 1970s. It takes time to degrade an economy via tax, andAT is a major tax, one pound in six in the UK on VATable goods is tax, so it makes people poorer.
